Week 9 – Jago

grading parties: teachers gather at specified times and places to grade papers, helps to eliminate the tedium of grading many papers

140-180 students per teacher is a ridiculously high ratio, twice too many for a writing intensive course (teachers could have student-teacher interns to help grade papers)

first year teachers are expected to perform at the level of experienced teachers. Perhaps all students in teacher prep programs should spend one full school year in a class, and all new teachers

have a full-time mentor in the room with them. Make it a requirement that any teacher who wants to retire must spend a year or two as a full-time mentor or they cannot collect their pension

grading parties may lead to a consensus among teachers about what students are and aren’t learning and how instruction can be tailored to better suit student needs
